The Caterpillars – For Children aged 0 to 3 Years.

The Caterpillars are situated upstairs and have 3 play rooms and a separate sleep room, with a total capacity of 12 children. The staff ratios as set out by Ofsted are adhered to at all times.

This area is for our non mobile babies or those who are reaching their early milestones such as rolling, sitting and crawling. We provide a wide range of resources for the younger babies such as rattles, instruments, sensory baskets and much more.

Once each child has begun to crawl or walk they are then able to pull themselves up and become increasingly mobile, leading them into a whole new world of play, learning and exploration, they will be able to discover or role play and small world areas.

This room allows all children to put into place those skills they have picked up from you, their parents at home while they have watched you cooking, cleaning, and looking after younger siblings. They are able to use a wide range of newly developed skills such as co-ordination, mathematics, knowledge and understanding of the world and they begin to develop those all important social interaction skills. The small world toys such as train set, garage and dolls house allow them to develop their fine motor skills as well as their imagination.

Within the Caterpillars play is mainly free-flow which allows the children to develop their independence and choose the toys they wish to play with, staff carry out regular observations on the children which allow them to plan for future learning and development. Staff will also conduct adult led activities with the children which will present them with opportunities for challenge which encourages them to extend and build upon what they already know with the help and guidance of supporting adults.

All children have access to our messy and creative room which provides each child with a wide variety of activities such as water play, sand, painting, gluing and colouring, as well as many other messy play opportunities such as jelly, pasta, playdough and cornflour which encourages the children to play freely whilst involving all their senses, such as taste, smell and allows them to discover a variety of different textures.

We have a separate sleep room with cots and beds for the children which will allow them to sleep in comfort, for as long as they need without being woken up by other children. We have baby monitors linked into the main play room so staff are able to hear if the children are stirring etc. Staff also check and record that they have checked on the children every 10 minutes as set out in the government standards.

The Butterflies for children aged 3 to 5 years.

Once a child has progressed from a caterpillar theythen become a butterfly and move downstairs. This room has a maximum capacity of 23 by following the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum children are provided with a wide variety of continuous provision, structured activities as well as free play activities. We provide opportunities for all aspects of play to help extend their learning and development.

We run a rolling snack bar which encourages all children to develop their independence, fine motor skills and confidence. We encourage them to slice, pour and spread etc during this period, although staff are on hand to assist all children if and when required. The snack bar is open for 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon. We have a registration system in place which allows staff to monitor and ensure that the children have eaten.

Whist in the Butterflies the children have free flow play which allows them to choose if they wish to play inside or outside promoting their confidence, self esteem and encourages their independence. These skills are in use throughout the day as free flow play within the room allows the children to decide which areas of play and activities they want to take part in. Planning is based on the children’s interests; using the observations the children’s keyperson has written will help to influence the planning.

The Butterflies have a visual planning system which enables the children to choose the games, toys and activities they wish to do within their week at nursery.

All the children have access to the garden which encourages the children to demonstrate their physical skills through a number of activities like bikes, ball pool, tent, balls, sandpit, bats and balls.
Children also provided with the opportunity to grow their vegetables in our raised flower beds to encourage them to plant, dig and water their flower beds and watch their fruit and vegetables grow.
